A long-term and trusted partner of Definitiv, the Carbon Group is a perfect example of how adopting modern technologies can significantly improve business growth.
The Australian accounting and business consulting firm, prides itself on being an early adopter of technologies that help create value and efficiencies for the company, and its clients.
Its innovative mindset has paid off. Carbon Group has not only been able to grow its business in a downturn market but it has also recently taken out its industry’s highest accolade, winning National Firm of the Year at the Accountants Daily Australian Accounting Awards 2018.
We decided to sit down with the young firm’s Co-Founder, Jamie Davison, to find out how they have been able to successfully differentiate themselves in a competitive market.
Q: What distinguishes Carbon Group as the Firm of the Year?
Carbon Group has been able to successfully distinguish itself in the market with the following;
- Hunger for growth in a down market;
- Commitment to shaping and leading the accounting industry; and
- A holistic service offering for small to medium sized businesses. We offer our clients a one-stop-shop so there is no need for them to manage multiple service providers; which means a less stressful experience. This way, our clients can focus on growing their business.
Q: Why do you see innovation as so important to your success?
Technology is constantly changing and we need to be early adopters to ensure efficiency within the business.
Clients want a good lifestyle balance and adopting innovative technology is key to achieving this.
We built relationships with software companies in their initial stages (e.g. Definitiv and Xero). This has enabled us to have stronger relationships, allowing us to leverage their networks.
Q: Why is Carbon Group so passionate about adopting cloud and mobile based platforms?
The best thing about online platforms and mobile apps, are that they allow us to extend our reach beyond our physical location catchment areas.
They reduce the need for client-facing meetings. This means we are more efficient and less intrusive with clients, who would prefer to spend their time growing their own business.
They also reduce overheads, which in turn is good for our bottom line, but it also allows us to scale quickly, both in WA and nationally.
Q: What impact has online business platforms had on Carbon Group and its clients?
As they are cloud-based, they have allowed us to expand to the eastern states, enabling us to provide services nationwide.
From an operational perspective online platforms offer efficiency in scaling. The systems are already in place, you just need a laptop and internet connection to get started.
A great advantage of using modern technologies, is it allows us to offer our employees flexible working arrangements, including; working from home. By using cloud-based platforms we have built a better culture and have retained the best talent.
Our clients have also benefited with more transparency over accounts. Carbon and clients can be viewing the same reports, at the same time, regardless of location. Information is available at the touch of a button. Plus, data is in real-time so our clients can make more accurate and timely business decisions, rather than having to base them on historical data.
Q: Do you have any advice for companies looking to adopt business apps into their operations?
It takes time upfront but the rewards down the track are worth it.
Understand not everyone is receptive to change, both internal to the organisation and externally. So you need to factor this into any timelines.
